First Look at a Digital Arnold in Terminator Salvation?

Not sure if this is real or not, and I don’t read Korean, so i don’t know the context of the article where the image was found, but got an email today from a reader name Sean who tells me this is an image of Arnold in the upcoming “Terminator Salvation” movie. We’ve known for a while now that Arnold would be digitally inserted into the movie (as, well, it wouldn’t make sense to have a 60-something Arnold running around the movie), so is this it? See for yourself below.

Update: The Halcyon Company apparently doesn’t like the fact that I’m promoting their movie free of charge, so they’ve told me to remove the images of Arnold from T4 or else they’re coming to my house to kick my dog. So, sorry, the images are gone. They’ve apparently also gotten the Naver.com site to pull theirs down as well. Free publicity. Who needs’em, right?

This thing is Looking like the Hulk of Ang Lee, but really, looks ok to me, even the haircut of 1984 is kept, cool.
Neat, I’m glad they will some form of cameo.
It’s amaizing what they can do with computer animation these days, very sweet.
The top picture actually looks like something that you would see in a a video game….then again those are done in CG…

Well I’m sure its an early stages picture, and during the movie it should be harder to tell its CG when everyone is movie (as long as they had a really good animation team like Firefly/Serentiy did).

Ok, how can you guys say that looks bad? You must be seeing something i’m missing because if you didn’t tell me it was CG i never would have guessed it. Kind of a cool idea, like how long do you think it will be until they can realisticly recreate actors of the past and have them star in movies (like a new james dean movie or something); I know someone like sly stalone would love the idea and would surely lend his face and voice over work to make another rambo or rocky in another 20 years (if he doesnt jucie himself to death first). I think this movie will go down in history as being the first to do something which will become much more common in the not to distant future (a new star trek movie with the original cast still young?)
Anyway, nice to see another firefly fan here; i’m fairly certain the same 4 or 5 million people who love this show are the same who saw firefly.
jay, no offense but your wrong. They wont recreate dead actors using CGI, its just in bad taste. People would be upset (like relatives of the actors/ actresses) to see their loved one rehashed just for a money making gimmick. The picture looks ok, not the best GCI I have seen but at least they gave a nod to the original Terminator films for the fans. In the film, you probably wont notice that it is CGI anyway, things always look better on screen if they are moving. There is so much CGI in the film anyway, so who cares if it looks a bit fake? You don’t expect a HK or a harvester to look real cos they aren’t real. Good effort though.
Hey, Brian Singer already done that in Superman Returns, don’t you remember, MArlon Brando was bring to life by CGI, and in the credits they even got his name, MArlon Brando as Jor-El, you are so geting used with bad special effects and bad plots you are alreading getting with short memorys, I repeat, Mcg is not bringing anything new or refreshing to the Movie technology, you know I loved Peter JAckson’s King kong, how many of you watched it? And it was a failure in the Box office, and you are almosting doing McG a box recording for a Horrible movie he is doing, I will never understand you guys.

anyway, I like the CGI Arnold so far, just hope it still looks as good when in motion. as you can see from the ad above, it can tend to get creepy.
Hey, it’s impressive, really, scared me a lot, how long this guy died? Looks like fake, but impressive, maybe Swarzzenneger will appear in Blur images, with the camera focus on him, by by reality.
One more question if you don’t mind, the voice is the real voice of the guy? Is Orville Redenbacher real voice?

@jedivisconti; ok first i am the biggest superman fan (i even ran a web page about 10 years ago that was basically a letter writitting campaign to WB telling them not to use many of the ideas being put out by producer john peters like nick cage as supes and having a darker superman) so i hope i don’t get this wrong, didn’t they just mostly use his voice or something, like leftover material from the old movie, but i think your right there was some animation of his head or something. An animated head is one thing, putting that head on another actor and having him move around next to real actors is something else.

And the ad that someone mentioned, wasn’t that fred astarie dancing with a vacuum? (yes it was) they just took him dancing with a cane or something an replaced it with a vacuum. The orville commerical doesnt really count because that just looked like an impersonator, not CG. So I want to be clear, i’m fairly sure this is the first time they digitized someones head and put it on someone elses body in a feature film.

I found it while confirming my vacuum commercial hunch; it’s a john lennon telling us, imgine… YOU CAN GIVE A CHILD A LAPTOP! Which reminds me of forest gump, how did no one mention that yet? Forget the hilarious scene with lennon talking to gump and being inspired to write ‘imagine’, the movie is just filled with dead people cameos. IMHO they didn’t look that great but they looked pretty dam good and that was 10+ years ago. This lennon clip doesn’t look any better but i’m sure whoever made it had a fraction of the budget a major motion picture studio would spend on a feature. Also, I’m no lawyer but im almost certain once youve been dead a certain number of years people can use your image any way they want.
In short, i was and still am saying this film will be the first time they ever did this and it will surely NOT be the last.

jay - I don’t have the time to read that whole article, but was it just simply stating that there should be a law written to protect dead celeberties (unless they say otherwise before they pass away), or is it saying there are actual laws that could be tweeked to protect them in that manner?
First, i don’t get what that had to do wit the third amendment, since thats the amendment that prohibits quartering of soldiers in private homes during peace time, maybe i’m missing something. This debate seems to fall more under the first amendment, but whatever.
And yes justin, that was a long and wordy article. First it was written in 97 which may mean its no longer valid. One interesting interpetation found in there is that under california law you could potentially reanimate a dead celebrity without estate permission for the purpose of a biography. Basically, its seems illegal to do without permission of the estate but it is generally accepted this right expires 100 years after a persons death. Now these rules only apply to creating images from scratch, not to reengingering old footage which is what forest gump presumably did.
This reminds me of a recent history channel special entitled(or at least about) stealing Lincolns body. In the special they took life masks made from Lincolns actual face (he was kicked in the face by a horse as a child, deforming him and giving him that very unique look), scanned them, and reanimated him for certain scenes and created photos that never existed. Words cannot convey how creepy it was to see him walk, turn towards the camera and look you dead in the eye-you really must see this for yourself. In short, it looked amazing (partially because i believe the footage was in black and white).

What the third amendment had to do with resurrecting dead celebrities was really bothering me; did a bit of research and found that the amendment can also be interpreted as a right to privacy in various contexts. Just wanted to answer my own question; i really do love the interweb.
Jay, that Orville ad was not an impersonator. Only his voice was. The guy you see is CGI.
Its easier to tell in the higher quality version of the video, but I couldn’t tell you where to find that one anymore. It used to be on the official site, but I assume they took it down a while ago after the backlash from people who thought it to be in bad taste.

Justin, of coarse. he has been seen talking to McG on set, and there was a lot of talk of weather it would be appropriate for a governor to be apart of. If he or his people didnt want it done all they had to do was say the word.
Honestly they could not make him look 100 % like in T1 just by using digital technology. So that considered that picture looks pretty damn good. You believe immediately that it is the T-800 who tried to kill Sarah Connor back in 1984. Which is the whole point. If he really looks like that in the cameo than this is really great work from the guys at ILM. But I knew they could pull it off. Especially the guys at ILM are Effects-wizards. They were always the ones breaking into new territory. They did so 1977 with Episode IV of Star Wars,they did so 1992 with T2,one year later with Jurassic Park and continued that with the Star Wars Episodes I-III and Transformers (keyword: digital characters). So to me it just fits perfectly that its these guys who can recreate Arnold Schwarzenegger from 1984 with digital work. Another breakthrough. Also the competition has become greater and extremely capable themselves (Sony,Weta,Digital Domain) ILM still stands out as the pioneers. Which they deserve 100 %. Great job!!!
Agree T-300, and I find this issue of ILM you are bringing, a real one motive to McG do more then the best of him, to create a unfurgetable movie.
ILM were in the last decade the first and the only in create the visual effects, and now with Digital Domain, Weta, it’s been havilly competitive, so McG can’t afford a mistake.
I’ve just watched the G4 special and the HBO first look on Terminator SAlvation, some plot are revealed, and of course I will not tell, what I can say is there is no sign of Helena Bohan Cater on it, looks like her role will be of very importance, remeber the old leaked plot? Well is something like it. I’m wating, that I’m sure someone has already watched it, and don’t wanto to talk, I’m just waiting, Cannes is already gone, Comon people, where is your reviews?
The dude they picked to play Arnold, or at least the guy underneith the digital mask, is actually bigger than Arnold (size and muscle wise), so its gonna be interesting seeing a bulkier version of Arnold, lol.
Jay, They have been digitizing peoples faces and putting it on other actors for a little while now. It was done in Star Wars Episode II and III, Christopher Lee’s head was digitized and put on a stunt man’s head during far away shots of light saber duels. Heck they even did it in Jurrasic Park, There was in instance where a stunt woman’s head was clearly visible and then went back and put the actual actors face on her in post. A more extensive example is Benjamin Button. Old brad pitt was completely CG and added to the bodies of little people to get the effect.
Thought of another one. The Matrix Reloaded. Hugo Weavings head was digitized and put on other actors for the 100 man fight, for the scenes that weren’t completely CG.

What I have read and heard is that the movie is a bunch of nonsenses, the Terminators are well done, but useless, the one thing that really impress, they are more expressive than the Humns on it, the lines are horrible, things like: Human are better them machines, because we burried our deads, and not humorous mensions on classic lines of the original as: I’ll be back, and others, well this is the things tat KI’m reading, Anthony Yelchin and Christian Bale really try, they imput some emotion, but only shouting, never talking, the plot is complete confusing, specially the part of Helena Bohan CArter, wich try explain the time travel in a different way, but doesn’t bring any news to the sci-fi epics, the film have two hours for who likes enter and coming out, with the brain in totally relax, in fact some critics are saying that you can watch the whole movie without hear what the actors are saying, it will not make any difference in “Enjoy” the film, just one more: One of the critics told about the “real stuff” it’s the HArvestes, he tells that is so unecessary, so stupid, he asked for himself, This thing is so idiot that you can have your lunch, it’s so weak and slow, that the humans don’t need afraid that, but, it’s a Mcg movie, and the nonsense rules, because is Transformers, Charlies Angels and Terminator togheter, you already watch it, don’t you?

Who ever thought in 2003 that we’d look back on “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” as the good old days? Yet, the previous “Terminator” film, thought to be the absolute nadir, had two things going for it. It had Arnold (if you think a “Terminator” movie can be bad with Arnold, try one without him). And it had a villain.
But wait. All three previous “Terminator” villains looked human and were capable of speech. They could infiltrate human society, too. So how is this new model an advance? And if Skynet really wanted to infiltrate the human population, why would it keep manufacturing those monstrous-looking steel-skeleton robots? Question the story of “Terminator Salvation” in even a cursory way, and the edifice crumbles.
Still, why complain about botched dramatic scenes in a movie that’s all about the action? So let’s end with a word about the action itself: It isn’t really action. It’s commotion. It can’t be action if nothing happens, and nothing can happen because the commotion doesn’t advance the story. The commotion, the explosions, the fireballs function here only to delay action, to keep the status quo in place, so as to stretch what otherwise would be a 20-minute short into an almost two-hour feature.
“Terminator Salvation” looks busy, but it’s static. The thing doesn’t budge. It’s an epic waste of time.
And the one provided by “Rise of the Machine” scripters John Brancato & Michael Ferris (curiously there’s no mention of original character creators Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd) fails to give Bale and Worthington much opportunity to stand out from all the monochromatic rubble.
Whatever, jedi, whatever. first terminator was independent BUT it has changed since T2. I´m sorry to say but you won´t get your “T1 reborn”. It was once and it´s time to move on…sorry to say but as i said i don´t care about McG, i want to see it, judge it myself and you can think how stupid terminator fan i am but i don´t care either. I know that many people have the same opinion like you, but don´t forget that there are many who think like me, see it judge it and even there is so much crap in it, it´s all about personal taste.

I saw Salvation today and I liked it. It was nice to see todays’ technology in movies, really bring the machines to life. I also though the ‘cameo’ with Arnold was awesome. Sure a little bigger, but the first terminator WAS Arnold. CGI was amazing and yes the guy playing the body of Arnold was a lot bigger. The only part thats I didn’t like were the Sarah Connor tapes. I have seen T1 sooo many times that the voice was very off. For that they could have used the original and gotten Linda Hamilton to do the add ons. Other than that film was decent and it left it open for another one.

i’ve seen the movie and the arnold in the movie is meant to be the model originally in the first terminator. arnold is not in the movie though, the arnold in it is in fact CG.

just found your site,very political talk going on here,are we forgetting about the story? Seems some people(jedi guy) doesn’t understand temporal mechanics, if this was real T1,T2,T3 or TTSCC could have happened in any order using 2017/18 as a referance point,although the writers have made this simple for the general viewer by parallelling the timelines.Also T1 would have been a 15 or less(minus the tits)if released now.Of course they are going to use T-800’s in the new movie as these were the first(or second if you count the rubber skins)Terminators to be invented after the war. Surely after the first three terminator movies any true fan having seen all the little future clips wants to see the war??!! It’s about time!(that includes a lot of blowing stuff up !)

I’m in a middle of a War already, I do’nt want it, but it’s happening on My wolrd, (I don’t know yours), and it’s not caused by me, it’s caused by the rulers of countrys other than my, thanks God, my country is free of this kind of conflict, well, One of theese countrys (Warlords in fact), they once had some artists, they used to do great movies (Mixed in the reality we lives), one of these artists Name (A genious) made a film called The Terminator (WAs a Sci-Fi, believe-me, I understand the differences about reality and Fiction). The Terminator back in 1984 caused a great Commotion around the “GLOBE” (see Mooron), including my country, everybody understand the peace message on it, it gave us Hope.
Now I’m watching North Korea testing Bombs on Asia, and it makes me fell creep, and you come here talk to me with all this arrogancy (An Imperialist arrogancy I must say), telling me how bad is my grammar. And thinking that you just have an great artists showing to you a great War Movie (The prove that wass missing that the movie sucks), and thios great artist is McG?
