McG says he’s directing “Terminator 5″ and “6″. Or at least, he says he is. IGN reports:
During the live commentary for the movie over the weekend (that was available to those how had bought the film on Blu-ray) he said that - no matter which studio inherits the series - he is still set to direct the two sequels.
They don’t report much detail, but do reveal that he would consider bringing in the T-1000 (the ‘liquid metal’ Terminator played by Robert Patrick in Terminator 2: Judgement Day) for a sequel.
Gizmodo has the whole thing from the live-commentary broadcast here.
No!!! Not this clown again!
for gods sake noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I have to agree. I purchased T4 this past weekend and I’ve watched it twice and, to tell the truth, I didn’t think they were too bad… as action, sci-fi, and special effects extravaganza’s. However, I don’t believe the story was really good enough to fall in the Terminator dish with the first two; it was a LOT better than T3, but still not fit for the first two.
I am a huge proponent of having someone with a real love for the first two movies direct the 5th. T3 and 4 have their place in the Terminator mythos, whether we like it or not and, to be truthful, they are as natural a progression for such an odd concept as we could hope to get, I think. They advanced the story quite a lot, though not in the way hardly anyone cares for; they’re palatable to me as science fiction stories, despite their lack of essence.
Now, if we could get someone that is not a clown to direct these, that would be far better, I think.
Tell you what, if this means a few extra seasons of TSCC (continuing from where it left off obviously) between these movies, then I’m ok with it. Otherwise, gtfo!
I think McG is whistling in the Dark. T4 did not break even, and unless WB end up with the franchise, he has no chance of doing 5&6. IF there is another Terminator movie, Paramount or Sony would be my choices, or one of the smaller studios.
I agree with Paul about T4. Good action movie and Special effects. But is was both clueless and plotless. It was right to try and steer the films away from the old format.. Termie turns up to kill John Connor, good one arrives to save him. That scenario was played out at T2.
But T4 needed a far better script, plus it relied on the effects too pull it through.
A new film would need the writers from TSCC .. Josh Friedman et al.. to get it right.
of all the Terminator movies and series T4 was the worst of them. But still watchable… The next Terminator needs a much stronger story line, and better focus.
Way to go producers of Terminator 5 and 6.
Just make the Terminators look more like they did in Terminator 2 and 3 but that´ll of course have to be your choise.
I really loved all the Terminator films , and Terminator 4 really surprised me.
Terminator 5 and 6 should start where Terminator 3 left off to at least some extent.
It´s very important that Patrick Stewart get a chance to be T 1000 again.
I think it´s about time to consider it as an option to film scenes in Iceland.
Please note; In the far future it may be more difficult to get live actors than presently. In the near future difficulties should start coming to light by 2015 to 2018.
The Terminator films have moved so far away from being traditional Hollywood movies that 5 and 6 may become very unlike the first ones. That is extremely important , make the films less predicteable as they move on.
Try to keep scenes where John looks into his past , which might require a returning from actors from for instance T 3.
I believe the movie did follow the first 2. Yes there are differences but things had to be done because Skynet knew that Conner had a better idea of the terminators so they had to incorperate that into the movie. If you remember the scene at the beginning when they found the computers under the satellites they found a file containing the plans for the T-800 and Barne’s brother said “Just like you said it would be” and Conner replied “No, its worse” Meaning Skynet had changed some things about how the terminators were to be built.
In one word “disappointing.”
This is my opinion expressed on another website:
As an action film, T4 was okay. Beautifully shot. Great CG effects, but the story was mediocre. It was like watching video game in which someone else was playing. Also the story added nothing to the Terminator mythology. We didn’t have to see John Connor’s slow rise to leadership. Something like that could have been shown in flashbacks as he meets other leaders in the resistance during a major war. The story just rehashed previous themes. You have to build on established canon, not retell it. That was one good thing about T3, it was its own story building on T2 & T1 without regurgitating old themes.
Action: 5 Stars
CG & other special effects: 5 stars
Cinematography: 4 stars
Story: 2 stars
Terminator Ranking: 1 out of 5 stars
I bought the DVD, not because I liked the movie, but just to complete my library of Terminator Films and TV episodes. TSCC by far and wide had the better stories and is the best successor to T1 & T2.
How was the movie disappointing. i found it to be an awesome movie.
T4 was bland…like Christian Bale. This guy’s best movie was Empire of the Sun. It’s down hill since then. He is a non-factor in many of his films such as the second Batman and was severly upstaged by Heath Ledger as well as everyone else in the film.
At least he didn’t use his stupid Bat-voice in t-4!
what are u all on about……yer t3 wasnt amazing but cmon t4 was good…..
c’mon guys! I saw the movie at least 2 times to understand it and the story seems to be like a comic book from dark horse franchise! but if the comic books are awesome… why this movie not?
let’s see…
T1 was fantastic…though now a little dated looking. T2 was great…but starting to be a little too ‘clever’ with the ground breaking but unlikely morphing LMT. T3 was watchable, but too much of an attempt to cash in on the previous movies.
I bought the Sarah Connor Chronicles, thinking that it would be rubbish…then watched an episode…and another…right through to the next morning!
What a fantastic series…and also, the second. Yes, there were some dodgy episodes…but all TV serials have them, and the complex plotlines and enthralling development of the Cameron ‘character’…SCC was the way to go.
After that, T4 was a disapointment. Great visualistation and exciting in a ’shoot em up’ way…but Giant robots?
Any future for the Terminator story MUST follow from the SCC…and use the same, excellent, cast.
Whether in the form of DVD movies…or a resurrected TV series…there is SO much left to explore and enjoy.
I agree with almost everything you said. The one exception being your initial assessment comments on the Sarah Connor Chronicles before seeing them. I watched the series with no preconceived expectations. I watched it because it was Terminator and then I got hooked by the excellent stories and the wonderful acting. Lena Headey just blew me away in her performance as Sarah Connor. I do agree that some of the episodes of Season 2 were a bit dodgy, but then they initially planned for 13 episodes and then got an order for an additional 9 so I imagine some episodes didn’t get as much vetting in the pre-production stage as a lot of them did.
Your assessment of T4 was spot on. Visually fantastic. The action was great. The CGI was seamless, but for the one exception of Marcus being tossed along the river like someone skipping rocks, that was so obvious CGI. I wished they didn’t use that scene. But overall it was disappointing. At the end of the movie I’m like, what was the point of it all.
The future of Terminator should follow the TV series. Like you said, “There is so much left to explore and enjoy.”
the Movie wasnt supposed to fallow the series it showed how connor came to lead the resistance.
the series was what happened between T2 and T3.
I never said T4 was supposed to follow the series.
I’m saying future development of the Terminator franchise would be better to build from the series. It has shown more potential and offers a greater avenue for developing the Terminator legend than T4.
we dont even know how the series ends since it was canceled after the second season so there really isnt much they could go on
Ricky, You are missing the point. TSCC had better story and character development and shows greater potential for the franchise than continuing from T4 which had a lackluster story and characters you just didn’t give a damn about.
Of course we don’t how the series would have ended if it had gone on for another two or three seasons. But even so, with the work that was put into it, TSCC paints a better picture for the future of the franchise than the poorly conceived, but well executed T4. It had no story and no characters that mattered worth a damn. If T4 is the direction McG is taking the franchise, then it is dead. Terminator has no future in his hands.
I see ur point and u gotta realize they do tv series differently from full length films. yes it would of been a good story if they went off the episodes but he wanted to continue 11 years after T3 to show the rise of John Connor when he became the leader of the resistance. i do agree they could have had a better story line for it. i really hope they bring the series back it was awesome. they r talking about it but i dont know if it will happen.
This is excellent news, yeehaah!
well, at least we have more terminator movies..i actually liked T4..it was a lot better than T3 and it would be better with Arnie but it’s what we’ve got..i just hope that they can bring Arnie and James Cameron to the sequels…this would be like Heaven for all Terminator fans ’cause Cameron has that passion, i think, for the Terminator movies…
Cameron has said that the terminator movies have run there course he wont go bach to them
but i read somewhere that they were trying to convince him to come back. well, but rumors are rumors.
At least T3 added something to the franchise, and then set up the next film really well. T3 story wise was very under rated.
T4 did nothing, there wasn’t really anything in there to push the franchise forward. It was just some talky bits, then an action scene and repeat untill the movie ends. There was no bad guy to focus on also. In the last 3 there was one bad guy that people could look out for but in this there was nothing. I found his directing style to be very slow and boring.
what do u mean there was no bad guy were u not watching there was skynet and terminators yes maybe not one specific bad charactor but there was the skynet defense system itself and also it told the story on how connor met kyle and how he became the leader of the resistance the next movie will be what happens before the secend movie and what happens in the future while kyle is in 1984 im sure.
oh and also what happens before the first movie cuz kyle wasnt sent back in time b4 the end of T4
T3 was kind of redundant and the humor made it look more like a parody of T1 and T2. It wasn’t as good as the first two, but it was important for advancing the story and telling how John finally accepts his destiny and how he survives J-Day. Some hardcore T1-T2 fans pretend T3 wasn’t even made, but how will the story go on if the next movie was in the future? People would be confused since it was thought J-Day was stopped in T2.
Dear God, the Terminator franchise would just go down the drain if McG were to direct T5 and T6. Did he even watch T1 and T2? And no, just because Christian Bale is in it does not make the movie great. Bale is overrated, and it was the Joker who stole the spotlight with his insanity while Bale sounded like he had a bad cold the whole time as Batman. It’s the quality of the movie’s story and elements that makes the movie great. All he did was yell a lot, had a sudden attitude change, and was nothing like John’s personality everywhere else in the continuity sense.
We need someone as imaginative as James Cameron, who envisions the future war exactly as gruesome and horrible as Cameron did. Not something that looked like it was just made for money, with things ripped from Transformers, a jet that looked like a dropship from Halo, in which the machines only took humans to jail instead of killing.
I imagined a T4 that showed the beauty and moments of happiness of the human species before it was wiped out as the bombs fell without warning with Judgment Day happening in the beginning. That the future is in nuclear winter darkness, skeletal remains everywhere, with the remaining armed forces scattered or fighting for their own survival. That a filthy and haggard looking man named John Connor was in the Skynet orderly disposal camp disposing of human remains until he finds and escapes with Kyle Reese before storming the camp and starting the Resistance.
And I’m a big fan of Sarah Connor Chronicles. It would do it some justice if T5’s story tied in with SCC and included Derek, Cameron, Garrett Dillahunt, Ellison, Shirley, and Savannah in it. With Josh Friedman’s support.
oh no…not him…..
i am a huge fans of terminator franchise……
Pleasseee…don’t destroy it “againts”………..
T5 to be a film that will make the fans finally happy must concentrate on the horror and film noir premises of the first film. Ordinary fans do not want to see a sci-fi concept turned into a mere Action Movie, it dilutes the purity and wonder of the concept. However if the Producers simply want a blockbuster actioner to fill their pockets on the other hand?
This isn’t meant to advertise, but you guys should look up “Terminator Salvation game trailer” on Youtube’s search and watch some of the promotional trailers for T4 the video game.
The game itself I heard wasn’t good, but imagine if T4 the movie had action and atmosphere like that.
I am a huge fan of the terminator franchise and below is my explaination for the so called plotholes in T4:
In the submarine scene ironside told JC that skynet has intercepted a signal and everybody in this room will be dead, so based on this interception skynet has created a hit list and have came to know that a civilian called Kyle Reese is of great importance to John Connor and will use him as a bait to lure JC into to the skynet base, so to do this job skynet needed something to look, behave, feel like Human, so it resurrected Marcus Wright first to track KR then infiltrate human base find JC and lure him to skynet base, all this programming was done in the processor which is linked with the skynet but remember this processor was interfaced with Human brain which is the most active part of this Terminator so it didn’t exactly felt it being programmed since processor was just stimulating the neurons(of the human brain) to work that way so as to fulfill its programming. It is not a coincidence it met KR it is the processor which Tracked KR’ s location but yes it was coincidence the fashion he met KR(T-600 scene) and that level of coincidence can occur with anybody,u might wondering so why he asked KR’s name, date etc if it knew everything, it is the machine part which knew he is KR not the human part and due this reason also it is the best infiltration unit created(even better than the T-800,as it certainly cannot behave like human, even though he looked like human as this was evident in T2)as it completely believes he is human but in the last chapter of the movie he removed the chip and came to rescue of JC fighting the T-RIP which shows that human part is still stronger and differ us from the machines(which is the main motto of the movie).According to the point of view of the skynet it was learning step in the development of the T-800 ,which is devoid of human heart and brains so it will obey its orders mechanically(even though it can defy orders if its CPU is switched from “read only” to “learning mode”) . In of the interview McG explicitly told that was a movie about the R&D process of the most proficient killing machine of the skynet ,the T-800(in which story of Marcus Wright also included) and rise JC in becoming the leader of the resistance . In my opinion it is a good movie and terminator franchise is back.
well to me T4 seemed more like a tribute movie than an actual contiuation of the terminator universe, too many refences too the old movies all the while it was trying too move in a NEW direction, several things that bug me about T4 are DAYLIGHT why is the movie almost entirley in daylight we all know that the future is dark and cold with lots of skeletons laying around THAT is the established atmosphere of the TERMINATOR FUTURE not sunny and desert and heat, antoher thing the movie borrwed from other great franchises too much such as MAD MAX the whole driving a huge truck on a long stretch of road in the post apcolypse desert is the road warrior all the way,the giant machine that was kidnapping ppl looked too much like TRANSFORMERS and seeing as revenge of the fallen was out around the same time i think McG was just trying too cash in on the giant robot craze, anthoer thing when marcuz is next too the HOLLYWOOD sign and looks at L.A dose FALLOUT 3 scream out too anyone else with the greenish look in the atmosphere.all that coupled with random action and a 2 dimensional cast add in the constant homages to the First 3 movies i think there was about 5 times they refranced the old movies that were not needed at all too move the plot along like the cyberdnye logo on the consent sheet at the beging, the “come with me if u want too live ” line which has been said in EVERY TERMINATOR film or show the “Ill be back” line the exact same Guns and roses song that was in T2 and the T-101 or T-RIP that connor fights.Need i say more T4 was a mediocre too Bad film depending on prefrance BRING BACK TSCC.
It has its own qualities. As in, it would’ve made a great Terminator fanfic (and even then I see dedicated fans writing great stories, paying attention to the details of the future war) but definitely not a movie that is canon to the series. Because everything was just so off from T1-T3-SCC. I had doubts even when I saw the commercial trailers of everything being bright and heard of the PG13 rating. Here’s everything I find wrong with T4.
Nuclear winter is a only a hypothetical concept, and to some degree the T4 post-fallout landscape was done realistically. And perhaps by 2018 the world might’ve showed signs of recovery. Nice touch with the scattered bands of survivors hiding under a gas station, the bands of hostile gangs, scavengers and such. BUT this wasn’t what the future looked like in the past movies that was always darkness and cold. If it was like that in the past movies in which everyone’s used to, then they should’ve applied the same concept in T4. Even SCC did a better job of the post-apocalpytic world-the landscape and showing daylight being a hellish orange.
Plasma guns. If they say plasma weaponry hasn’t been invented yet, fine. Or they can just say the military was already expeirmenting on plasma guns before J-Day (the plasma rifles had names like Westinghouse) and Skynet worked on it and began to mass produce it already. I think a lot of people wanted to see the plasma weapon firefights, people getting ripped apart by it and such. Original action scenes were also lacking.
T-600s. What’s with the bulkiness, the built-in minigun and ammo pack? I was under the impression that they looked like the T-800s. That is, they look like humans except they had rubber/leathery skin, weren’t as tough or smart as the T-800s, and failed to fool humans when they tried to use them as infiltrators. Kyle talked about this, and in SCC we even saw the older models with rubber skins.
The skulls and human remains were nowhere to be seen. I’ve never been to a site of a nuclear holocaust like Hiroshima or Nagasaki so I wouldn’t know whether there are skeletal remains everywhere afterward. Many of the dead would’ve been just vaporized by the blast so I guess there was some realism there. But there were skulls everywhere in the past movies so they should’ve put them there. Not to mention the ruins of LA looked a much grander scale everywhere else than in T4.
The Harvester and Moto-Terminators weren’t necessary and was totally not original. Combined with a lot of other things, it looked like Transformers and the Matrix.
The machines didn’t really slaughter people and rip people apart. They just took them to jail and toss their top targets around a bit. TV and movies weren’t what they used to be. Nowadays it’s mostly dumbed down, sugarcoated, doesn’t provoke imagination, and not as violent because of nervous bands of parents. Terminator + PG13 rating = disaster. I knew it before it even came out. SCC was only a TV show and it still had a better story and elements.
John Connor. Many people said he was a wuss, always wanting to run and complain. I don’t blame him. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders, knows the world is going to end horribly since he was little, drifted from place to place, is expected to lead, and is always being hunted by machines before he was even born. He finally accepts his destiny at the end of T3. What he lacked was decisiveness. He was always a depressed, reclusive loner. The sudden attitude change after J-Day was too extreme, and wasn’t the John we knew. He was like some commando out of Tom Clancy all of a sudden.
The resistance. There was an element of realism about the remains of the armed forces fighting Skynet where John was just a grunt in the already existing resistance. But again, this didn’t fit with continuity. Kyle said it was John that gave them hope at their darkest hour, escaped from the concentration camp, and started the resistance. T4’s promotional slogan was ‘We Fight Back’. It wasn’t until John Connor forming Tech-Com did humans start to fight back. I was expecting Skynet would move to destroy any remaining military forces after J-Day and any pockets left would be like a gang fighting for their own survival.
Marcus. Without Marcus, I doubt there’d even be a story. Focusing on John would’ve been better.
The movie also lacked a humanizing theme that distinguished the difference between machine and man. You had Ashdown who wanted a strike on Skynet that would kill many civilians, resistance soldiers shooting at Blair and Marcus.
Summary in one sentence-McG should stick to writing fanfic on Terminator fan sites, not doing the movies.
Steve correct, T4 missed out on its Horror/Sci-fi/Film Noir (your night backgrounds and detective after a killer, low light shots, etc) genre pedigree, perhaps JJ Abrams can do the justice needed like he did for Star Trek rebooted.
Thus far, we don’t know the actual direction McGee wants to take the Terminator, consider this;James Cameron ‘came up’ with the Terminator after a feverish nightmare and the influences Harlan Ellison’s pieces in the Twighlight Zone/Outer Limits from the 60’s. Consulting anyone?
On the other hand current Hollywood blockbusters may be prejudicing McGee’s T4 Product, we know the Terminator 4 and T5 can be better though and we agree, we miss the old but we also love the new that is faithful to the classic elements, I think the homages to the previous T1,2,3 were candy salutes to the loyal fans since 1984.
Consider the horror when humans find they are going to be all genocided as a species by their own creation.
terminator 5 an terminator 6 need be rated r with alot of kiling in iit like a war movie.
Hi, guys. I am a fan who live in Taiwan. TSCC season 2 is just brocasting on our TV. I watched T4 last year ,and then just watched TSCC S1 and S2 now. The story of T4 is too thin and weak. It’s just a keeper which keep the old story. No any pleasant amazement.
But the story of TSCC is very amazing and creative. Many new nice ideas are added in. More humanity (Including conspiracy), family, and even love. Not just chasing and escaping,
iif there is a T5 in the future, I wish T5 become from TSCC S3movie.
Now T5 or T6 doesn’t matter, in the future - maybe.

I’m fan of Sci-Fi so Terminator [all] at least got the pulse of humanity in SCC and that is what I always loved and enjoyed. Robot=Human. Or human feelings mixed with metal.
What we have seen in all Terminator? Thin line of weak human feelings and mass of metal with his strength…and a bit of hope that WE will be alive.
SCC gave us our destiny - machines. Metal with feelings.

Thats was great. Two seasons of SCC were super. Thanks. And I also agree that IF future will give us T5 it would be great to become from Sarah Connor Chronicles [with SCC actors - would be a BOMB for fans]
