McG Talks Terminator 5 and 6, Promises Time Travel

Oh boy, here we go again. In the aftermath of “Terminator Salvation”, director McG has finally sat down to talk about what he has plan for “Terminator 5″ and, says McG, “Terminator 6″. According to the director, they are already at work plotting out the plot of the fifth and sixth movie, and that it will definitely involve time travel. And yes, this time around, John Connor (Christian Slater again) will be the central character and not some guy no one has ever heard of showing out of the blue to take over the movie ala “Salvation”.
Here are some highlights from McG’s interview with IGN, which you can read for yourself here:
- He’s already plotting T5 and T6 together, so that would seem to indicate that the two films would lead into one another, as a sort of two-parter, perhaps.
- Christian Bale will definitely return as John Connor, who will take the lead.
- McG acknowledges that the critical and fan response to “Terminator Salvation” was bad and that it “kicked his ass” because he really wanted to do well, given his great respect for James Cameron, who he calls his hero.
- He says that T5 will be “more of a chase movie”, with possibly John Connor running from a Terminator — in the past, would be my guess. Here’s what he says exactly about the plot of T5:
One of the problems is that in a post-apocalyptic world, everybody’s a little bummed out because your brother melted… your friends are gone. Everything went haywire. So the idea is to play with one of the tried and true rules of the franchise – time travel – and introduce it in this picture. I don’t want to share too much, but let’s just say it’s very, very likely that John Connor is going to end up running through rooms like this where he knows something that none of us know. And I think that is a platform for great storytelling. Because I always love it when [Kyle] Reese is in our world, as you saw in the first picture, and everybody thinks he’s out of his [expletive] mind and he knows and he can’t afford to be concerned. And he’s got to convince someone he cares about to come with him! And that’s one of the engines. And we’ll have a much more clearly defined antagonist in the new picture. It will be more of a chase movie with a new Terminator that is on your ass.
He also reiterates that the International box office of “Terminator Salvation” may have been the franchise’s salvation (if you will), and that Warner Bros. is “excited” about doing the sequel. Of course, McG has been known to blow smoke before, so I can’t see them being all that excited about the film’s overall box office, which though good, isn’t spectacular given the budget and franchise name recognition.

No..the first Terminator movie did not start at the begining and neither did salvation.
I hope my question can be answered at some point and i hope the next movie is better than the last one which could have and should have been epic !

there are alternate timelines in the terminator universe. that’s why john knew he had to send back kyle to protect Sarah. kyle doesn’t know that he’s the father when he’s being sent back. he just thinks he’s the one chosen to protect Sarah so she can eventually have John.
i got myself mixed up !! I should have said why did jc send reece back to protect sarah and concieve jc when obviously that is what happened already in jc’s past. Either way there must be an original timeline that we do not see!

yes your logic is right , but , skynet sends a terminator to create a new future without JC , if JC goes back in time himself the probability to loose both futures are higher . so he sends kyle to protect the second future , i advise you to watch the ” Terminator : Sarah Connor chronicles ” .
Some writers need to do more reasearch before actually putting anything in print. Its Christian BALE, (not Christian Slater) who is john connor.
As for terminator 5’s plot. kyle reese would have to be sent back somewhere near the end of the movie. Terminaro 6 would have to send Arnold back TWICE.
Also, at the end of the third movie, Arnold gives a time and date of John Conner’s death. Wonder if they will kill him off at the end.
Oh and if the rumours about t5 in London gtdo cause terminator is u.s.a baby “L.A branch”

Sorry guys, what I meant to say is that the fans of the franchise don’t want any more from McG. I definitely welcome more movies with better screenwriters, however, just not him as returning director-or returning anything for that matter.
And regarding Mr. Bale, well, I lost all respect for him. His alleged verbal abuse towards his sister and mother is sickening on so many levels. Verbal abuse is unacceptable behavior at any rate.

I am really interested in watching some more Terminator movies but I would get depressed if Mr. McG is going to be the director, again. His T4 was not good enough for so many reasons that I seriously doubt, he could do a better job than the one he has already shown to be capable of.
The Franchise deserves better. Science Fiction deserves better.
what the hell are you talking about? Terminator 4 is an epic movie that i could watch again and again. i saw it 4 times at the cinema thats how good it is. How can you say that T4 wasn’t good? Have you even watched T3? It was by far the worst of the 4 films, John Conner was a little girl in that film… and he is supposed to be brutal and awesome like he is in 4.

I think t 4 was better than the 3 and yes it could had add more jhon in it he is the man who is going to save us after all but over all t4 was good not as good as t1 or t2 and (t2 .3d but hay i you cant beat what james camron had done with them not realy. yeh i agree there he should come back but he too bussy with all the other things at the moment to to t5 and 6 i think Im shore hes doing the best he can to help mcg and keep it alive the best he can.If mcg wont do it will we see the t 100 back somone else might kill it all togerthr they might not but i dont know i say give him one more try and if t5 goes down then say get rid of mcg forever. Terminator Salvation wasn’t all that bad, It was Kinda Flat & the cut scenes weren’t that Great & instead revealing Marcus as A terminator before the release would have been great twist when you seen it. I give the Movie 3 out of 5 cause it was a great popcorn flick & better then T3. Good Tie ins to the Original. I want to see the Future play out not this going back in time crap to 2011 crap & keep the rules in place from the original not this going back in time crap. unless John goes back to Stop the Terminator from T3 does a retelling of T3 & the war breaks out from there. But still going back in time still sounds pretty stupid leave the past alone MCG its been told. How could WB be stupid enough to keep any of these people around for T5? They see how many People that didn’t like T4 what makes them think The Fans are gonna be so kind to give T5 a chance? MCG I hope you learned a lesson don’t cater to actors who want to chop up your story, You wanted Bale so much for what? He was a baby he wouldn’t take the Role of Marcus (Best Character next Reese) you had to give him the role of John. Guess what the Movie shows that the Rewrites & cutscenes didn’t flow very well together cause it was chopped up For Bale & Made his performance flat. Bale didn’t make the Dark Knight Heath Ledger did.

I would like to see elements from the Sarah Connor Chronicles somehow make it to one of these movies. In my opinion, The Terminator TV show had more heart than the last two movies.

since 1984 we have all been hearing of this great post-apocolypic war between men and machines. Terminator Salvation showed Connor in the middle of that war using things he had learned from the past and from his mother. we have all been waiting to see this future war and the awesomeness it will bring. Salvation did that. it may not have done so well at the box office, but the film makers must put that beside the point and say “in order to make a successful franchise we need to keep moving forward and stay with a basic plot.” The basic Plot is the Terminator war. STAY IN THE FUTURE. let us see the end of the war. let us see John Connor as he has been prophesied in the original 3 and this one. let us see him take up the mantle of “Leader and Savior” if the filmakers want to make a franchise that will make people say “wow, that was a great story and wonderful ending” then stay in the future and stay with what people want to see. we’ve seen the past John Connor, let us see the John Connor we’ve all heard of and all been waiting for, let us see the connor who the whole franchise is about. stay in the future and finish this franchise off right.
I agree 100%. In T1 it was all about this great leader. In T2 it was all about young john hearing about what he would become and trying to come to grips with that. In T3, despite it’s faults, it added a little bit to John Connor’s development. Finally T4 showed him on the cusp. Developing his following, earning their respect and loyalty. To go back in time now kills the franchise.
My thoughts, T5 should end with Connor sending back his father on the eve of a great battle after the resistance learns time travel from Skynet and of Skynet putting the assassination of his mother into motion. T6 ends after an epic victory over Skynet with Skynet just sending the chick-bot back to in time before it goes offline. John dies, and his wife sends the Arnold back in time. Cut, roll credits. Everything is tied off in a neat little bow.
Exactly. And, parts 4, 5, and 6 should be all about the search for Kyle Reese. The machines were searching for John in 1, 2, and 3 (and also trying to kill his mother), so 4, 5, and 6 should have been them trying to kill his father. It would have been parallelism and it would have worked.
Unfortunately, the meeting of John and Reese was entirely anticlimactic even though it should have been the biggest moment of the film. The meet up of the two in the Sarah Connor Chronicles was more emotional.
I think “Salvation” should be all considered a bad nightmare (because it was, cinematically speaking) and Connor should wake up, shell-shocked, in the middle of a battle in the next movie — and it should be called “Terminator 4.”
You idiots, T3 was one of the worst movies ever made, (My favourite all time movie being T2), and you didnt like T4? At least they had more endoskeleton action and the development of the T-800. I thought the T-600s were out of this world and it was a more of a gritty movie than the last one. I believe if McG says can make it alot better than I believe he can too. Stop all this blabber and the war really begin!!
i agree completely about T3… it was absolute crap. i just block it out and pretend it doesn’t exist coz it ruined terminator for me… but then 4 came and it kicked ass!!!

What crap! Going back to time travel? That has been a tried and over-played plot line.
Here is why Terminator 4 sucked:
(1) They are in the future, where are the fricking laser beams Every other movie had showed the future with fricking laser-beams. Are we really to believe the humans could have lasted without effect weapons? NO!
(2) Jar Jar Binks Character - That was the Worthington character. He sucked and basing the plot line around him was a joke. Earth to writers, the robots helping the humans doesn’t work when the war is on. Stick to humans fighting robots.
(3) The robots should be ignorant to the future. They shouldn’t know who Kyle Reese is or John Conor. Yet they do.
(4) The STUPID trap scene. First, if they knew Kyle was John’s father, why the F#@K didn’t they just kill him on stop. If they were going to set a trap for Conor, why did they send one unarmed terminator. Hell they should have surrounded him will 100s of armed terminators.
(5) And god dammit. T4 is about a war between robots and humans, make it R like the previous ones!
T4 failed the plot SUCKED, the characters SUCKED, there was too much hollywood BS and to much inplausibility!
I think Steven Spielberg should take john connor back to 1984 in a stainless steel Delorean….where he has to convince Kyle Reese that he has to protect his mother from a robot disguised as Austrian bodybuilder/biker whos is out to kill her!….all before his image disappears from a polariod picture!

I think Terminator 4 was good. It could have been better. It was much better than T3. I think if McG tries harder he could have a good movie that nears the greatness of T2. Better script/plot and don’t repeat things like T3 did by rehashing. The back in time thing could actually help by visiting 2011 the movie will be more grounded and may help viewers connect with the movie. Just because he goes back in time does not mean you can’t have some future sceens in the movie. I hope the terminator is a good actor and looks tough. Also, the exoskeloton robot needs to look better than t4. I think T2 exo robot looked better.
Side note two helocopter crashes in T4 was redundant and cheesed up the movie. Also I did not like the ending considering all the time spent developing a new character only to kill him at the end.
As far as summer blockbusters go I thought T4 was blown away by Star Trek and Wolverine, not to say that T4 was a bad movie, I thought it was cool especially at the end when the cgi arnold came out! But seriously, arnold made t2 great and reese made t1 great, I think the new character marcus made t4 great. and I don’t know why people give t3 a bad name, it wasn’t that bad, plus it was critical to advancing the story line. John Conner sucked in it, but the story itself wasn’t bad and it had some good action scenes. plus at the end when the guy is like who’s in charge there and john hesitates and then says I am. That was cool!
I think ‘Salvation’ was very good, very different from the first three films and a good sign of the start of a new trilogy. I do think that the time travel element should not happen until the T6, that way T6 could end with Kyle Reece being sent back so the film could end to join up with T1, similar to what they did with with Star Wars Ep 3 to Ep 4.

whatever they do with the terminator franchise they need to make sure that it ends with the last one intertwining with the first (time travel etc) id like to see the 5th be all out war with man v machine not another long chase from a new terminator…thats just trying to be like t2 and god forbid t3 (shocking) and i would like to see more brilliant references to the early terminator movies like mcg did in t4…(kyle reeces jacket etc) say what u like about mcg but i think he did a good job with t4.. he should do the other 2 aswell..
There was a huge gap between 3 and 4 that should not have been. Now there is no choice but to explore the gap from the point of judgment day to when John Connor emerges from the bomb shelter. This will now require time travel to some extent and end where it started like Star Wars.

I don’t get why McG is getting such a bad rap for charlie’s angels. Yes, the movie was horrible, but he didn’t write it, he directed it, and it did what it was supposed to, bring three super hot she spies from the 70s into a bilievable modern time. Plus, we got to see Drew, Lucy, and Cameron all sexwed up on several ocasions, not to mention We all owe one helluva thank you to mr mcginty for the carwash ending credts of full throttle.
when i was a kid watching T1 i always wondered how john connor got his scar on his face and now i know. T4 is awesome and even though T2 is my fav i have to say T4 is as good. even showed how reece got the picture of sarah cause you know it was in the jacket. anyone who thinks T4 wasnt good needs to have their head examined cause obviously they work for skynet! lol

I think T4 was brilliant in a sense that I could see the movies going forward, yes there is a time gap fro T3 to T4 but I don’t think it would need to be explained much. It could be done with flashback dreams from John Conner in the next movie like kyles dreams in the first. But let’s look at how T4 fits in with the other movies, all of the references worked, as of 2018 movie time, conner has kyle protected, and he also has a corpse of a machine that he could send back to protect himself in T2. John Conner needs to move forward in fighting the machines in the future while remembering to send the machines to the past to protect his childhood.
As for the idea to send Conner himself back in time just sounds idiotic according to what has happened. He has tried to escape death every time from the past as his ultimate goal was to survive until he became leader. Why go back in time and take chances? I think the next movie should show them kicking machine ass trying to find out how to time travel so he can send Kyle and the Machine back.
Terminator Salvation was good but it wasn’t even close to brilliant. And that’s because McG is an idiot and wants to send John Connor back in time which is the dumbest thing I ever heard.

I thought that Terminator salvation was good but could have been better. I think with out Arnold the Terminator movies is not complete. They should have came out with a T3 in the mid 90’s where Arnold would have still looked half way young not a old man. Then from there they could have aleast had 1 or 2 more before he became gov. of Cali. Since they didnt they should have stoped with T2 and left it along like back to the future 3.
I think that the next two films should stay in the future, otherwise its just repeating the same storyline as the other 3 films. And that has been done to death, as others have said show us the audience how John Connor etc get to skynets time machine and show Kyle Reese etc being sent back in time. If Halcyon want to stay with the young John Connor, then renew the fantastic Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but please let the other Terminator films be new and in the future, otherwise its just messy and shows a lack of vision.

Bring in the whole cyberdyne project with an emphasis on AI and the evolution of technology and find a way to create a villain. Dont just do another rehash that is so close to the originals that i have to puke. Be original, it doesnt have to be a stupid villain and a chase scene, it can be more epic than that for sure.
NO!! I wish somebody powerful would just ask me please “what can we do to (if we want to make another Terminator Movie) what can I as a director do? How will my story be? Listen. Enough!! We don’t need anymore surprises, because T3 already surprised us enough!! WE THE FANS KNOW WHAT THE STORY IS!! WE JUST NEED TO SEE IT VISUALLY!! To be honest I already have a plan I can make my own script, and still follow the story! What I would do is this!! (LOL my idea for the T5) The year is 2026. Skynet is developing new and special ways to destroy us. John Conner blew up the computer factory in San Fransisco after encountering the t-800 prototype. Which wasn’t at all very important considering the fact that the prototype failed. Kyle Reese has grown up, John Conner’s children had grown up. To develop into the most advance tech com unit! Now since we rushed to see the t-600’s and the unstoppable t-800, we cannot really show too much of the t-400s. But since t-800 was the prototype, SkyNet has to learn from its mistakes right? So we have learned that Marcus Wright has defeated the t-800. SkyNet needs something of more a human R&D project and to actually gives these cyborgs like a more serious control over them. Kinda like “The Terminator: Dawn of Fate game.” Now 2027 hits, we can actually see the more serious development the T-800 (we see how the skynet software for the T-800 was actually intended to travel back in time in T1. example the search and destroy tracker system when in T1 after the club shooting scene, when the Terminator was chasing Kylie and Sarah) That part I got ahead, but humans will be turned into a cyborg type thingy, and they will be simulated on the field by skynet. that when hit or killed they will just turn into liquid. (the future development of the T-1000 and TX) Lol see!! After this is all said and done, we will forget seeing T3 and just continue after T2. (because we were actually forced to continue with more Terminator Movies after the chip and the arm, and Cyberdyne and Dyson were all destoryed, but somehow things would eventually be surfaced and we will see that it relates to the first two films of the Terminator. I would def. at the end have skynet perfect cold fusion in order to have a successful time travel!! I would put Arnold in there as the finalized T-800 prototype (the same as the first Terminator in T1, actually the exact). Robert Patrick as the revived liquid simulated solders (200 cybernetic liquid simulated solders, not exactly terminators) Christian Bale as John Conner the leader of the resistance, Tech-Com, not as a solder though. Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese, being more protected so John Conner can save him to go back to 1984. (sort of like a secret weapon) I want everything to be as though as it was in the first terminator movie. Plus with Reese, in Salvation he was the prime target, so it will fall right into place, we will not alter no future!! I’am not a University of Pittsburgh student with a major in the sciences for nothing!!!
If MCG is really just going to do ANOTHER back in time movie then just cancel the project… you can only recycle the same plot so many times before it gets stale (T3 proved that). They should have written all three episodes of the second trilogy at the same time (like The Matrix, Star Wars, Lord of The Rings), things come together a lot better that way… I’d watch all three episodes of a final trilogy set in the future to finish the story. So far Eddie Furlong has been the only good ‘John Connor’ so far, Bale is a grade A douche and a terrible actor… Sam Worthington would have made a much better John Connor, he’s a better actor and doesn’t treat the hard working people who make his job possible like garbage…
Bring back James Cameron, even if we have to wait a year for him to be available, he’s worth the wait… he’s a visionary, just look at T2, and AVATAR… hell, look at EVERYTHING he’s done…

I like someones idea to forget about T3, but still get to include salvation as the new T3, call it TERMINATOR 3-SALVATION. Why can’t we forget about THOSE FRANCHISE ERRORS like all Studios had, like for example Warner Bros with Batman and Robin, and Forever. And I wish Lucas could destroy and remake episodes 4 to 6.
Yes, we want to see the future with John Connor. But why Bale? I think Bale is the newest action figure out there, but not the only one. And please include the original T1000 with a CGI generated Terminator. I’ve hoped to see Superman Returns with a CGI of Christopher Reeve. Hey why not? Just let James Cameron and Lucas ILM rewrite and direct the next two movies. And look at the effects this two have come up with Avatar. Yes, there should be a great sequel to T3-S and we hope they dont takes us back to the past, but to see the war with the machines ans skynet we are all waiting for.
Last scene of TERMINATOR 6 : john conner learns that skynet has created a time machine. Also skynet has sent a terminator back to 1984 to kill Sarah Conner. When Kyle Reese hears this he volunteers to go back in time to stop the terminator. john connor agrees and tells him to memorize something. End credits.
T1 - protect sarah
T2 - protect john
T3 - Kate and John survive judgement day
T4 - find and protect kyle rese. Marcus a new terminator. it could possibly b that Marcus is a prototype of the terminator from the first 3 movies. in terminator 2 it was explained that skynet didn’t want the terminators to do much independant thinking. this could possibly be the reason for that.
skynet capturing people - quite possible they are doing testing on humans
T5 - sounds like they find a way to do time travel and beta test it - possibly makeing a parallel universe

Dude’s as far as I’m concerned T3 doesn’t even register as a Terminator movie, it was so cheesy! yeah the CGI was pretty good, but the writing and directing were just plain awfull! You know when a Terminator movie starts with Arnie wearing pink shades that you are about to waste an hour and a half of your life that you will never get back… actually, an hour and 28 minutes… the 2 minutes of judgement day nukes at the end needed to be told. I think T5 should have a directive collaboration with McG directing the effects and James Cameron directing story lines! Now that would be a sexy little number!

Terminator 5 should stay in the future. John Connor should now be the leader of the resistance and T800’s should be the main enemy replacing the nearly obsolete T600. There should be more action than Salvation and maybe a storyline where the resistance find out that Skynet have developed time travel and are planning to use it to send T800 back in time to kill Sarah Connor. We already know what happened in the first terminator movie so this should be about how the resistance managed to send Kyle Reese back in time….maybe this could be seen at the end of the movie.
If they do Terminator 6, perhaps this could show the end of the war (still in the future as we don’t want to see more time travel as it has been done too much). Maybe the resistance could devise some way of bring down skynet once and for all. An idea i had was that the resistance develop nanotechnology to destroy skynet. This would be kinda cool as it would kinda be like humans creating machines to take out machines. After all, we invented skynet in the first place so we are more intelligent that some stupid robot

I think that if they gunna make a t5 then it should relate to t1, by the resistance (led by john) finding out that skynet have found a way to time travel and are sending a t-800 (arnie) back to kill johns mother sarah connor then the resistance plan to invade skynet and stop the t-800 from going back but when they invade they realise they’re too late and the t-800 has already went back to 1986 so john has to decide who to send after it, then he hears a recording by sarah in his head saying that kyle has to go back then marcus (who is revived by gettin a new heart) voleenters but John says no and asks Kyle who says yes, but john tells him to memorise somfin then after kyle goes through the resistance bomb skynet and think they have won, and the end of the movie shows kyle arrive at 1986

Count me out at the box office if they decide to completely rewrite the history of the franchise. Keep it in the future, don’t go back and change things. Think about shows like Enterprise that kept throwing time travel in to skew things around because the writers lacked any sort of creativity. MCG its okay to eat your pride, the last movie wasn’t that great, in fact it was the worst despite the visuals and finally getting a glimpse at the future. T3 wasn’t awesome but at least I left the flick feeling good about the direction of the plot. T4’s ending was tragic and completely meaningless, an introduction to something empty and void. Please, for TLOC do not focus on the past, freaking move on and keep the future gleaming bright.
First off, forget goin back in time. It has been done too many times and can only produce the same results even with better effects. Also everyone should stop moaning about T4 not living up to the likes of T1 + 2. It was a different decade with different thinking. T1 had a more sinister almost horror feel to it, the series has evolved since then. T4 i think was really good it had loads of wee homages to the older movies. (The gun n roses song, “come with me if you want to live…”, the shotgun on a string, to name a few.) the stage has been set for the future war we want to see it’s only just starting, theres still time for lasers and stuff remember when reese talks of the future in T1 he’s alredy a full grown man. and did you notice the big scar J.C got at the end of T4? He had that in the older movies when you seen him in the future. He’s just stepping into the legend he’s meant to be, so give it some time. And “Chill out d*ckwads.”
If theres no time travel how will the rest of the terminator movies make any sense?
I dunno y ppl r slaggin t3&t4 i mean the storyline was a bit off but overall they were unreal movies and with out them the terminator series wouldnt make anysense.
The Sarah conner chronicals is a awesome show and da storyline is unreal but the future movies can’t immitate or be the same as the show because it’s only a spin off after all
